Illustrator: Ross McEwan
Posted by Dave Garraway

Ross McEwan is a freelance illustrator and print designer based in London. He instantly made an impression on the art world at his graduation by receiving recognition from the Computer Arts Graduate Showcase award in 2010 along with the selection for the Association of Illustrators Annual Images 35 and 36.

His portfolio of work is breath-taking. He manages to obtain a precise level of detail that makes his illustrations almost appear lifelike. Most of his illustrations are bound to a human form in one way or another. However they seem to have an air of magic to them.

The first illustration from his portfolio has subtle colours running through it. For me, these really make the piece, because it helps show the different patterns in the feathers and the textures in the skull. The next has a tattoo flash feel about it, but the addition of the stars in the hair alongside the bows and feathers give the piece a really magical feel.

The last is the most interesting overall. This could have many meanings but the combination of having that level of detail in the face, and the addition of a person and jigsaw pieces is just inspired. It has many different levels and shows the length and depth that Ross is willing to go to achieve his work.
