Street Style: Manchester
Posted by Georgina McCann
Manchester, possibly considered the fashion capital of the north and a place with a diverse mix of urban city style.
Lying in one of the largest metropolitan areas of the UK and being the third most visited city after London and Edinburgh, it is no wonder that Manchester has much to admire in fashion and street style, and is attractive to a modish audience. That, and the fact it is home to the second largest shopping centre in the UK, the Trafford Centre.
The city is resided by nearly 500,000 people, many of which flock from all over the country every year to go to one of the two Universities, meaning that Manchester continually has a fresh and distinctive array of inhabitants.
The first two girls that I spotted particularly portray the smart/casual student persona.
The first girl looks very befitting for summer already and I was surprised to get my first glance of clear-tights, especially in Manchester where it is renowned for notoriously bad weather and constant rainfall!
This short summery dress looks great teamed with a cropped denim jacket and she adds shape to her dress with a simple brown belt.
To dress the outfit down she wears Converse trainers, which seem to have made a revival in youthful fashion. The second girl also utilises comfortable footwear but in the form of Toms.
The second girl’s outfit is minimal yet refined and my favourite element is the printed shirt, which is only buttoned up at the bottom. This tidies her appearance yet gives the look an informal approach too. Her washed-denim jeggings are also very flattering and will be great for a summery look while also preparing for the unpredictable English weather!
The next gentleman looks particularly nonchalant and fits in effortlessly with the urban landscape.
His clashed denims work stylishly on him while also giving him a unique sense of style. I love the way that he has added a personal touch to the outfit by turning up his jeans and buttoning his denim jacket to the top with the bottom two left untouched. This is something I have seen boys do before and never quite understood, but it works particularly well here.
His contrasting turquoise checked shirt and simple hat add to the outfit and I love his spotty socks that are peeping out underneath his jeans!
This man is undoubtedly apt to the city life and almost depicts the laid-back, indifferent Manchester attitude. With a backwards cap and his over-sized khaki coat he is casual and careless yet stylish. His outfit is brightened up with a blue checked shirt showing through, and he has rolled the sleeves of this over the coat so that it is particularly visible.
His contrasting purple trainers also add further interest and his personalised skateboard is an added touch. Very festive.
The final lady that I found is still preparing herself for weather changes, and rightly so, although it does looks like she was mid-way through taking off her gloves! I love her instantly noticeable bright red jeans. The ¾ length is particularly on trend and this looks great with her cute brown ankle boots. To contrast this, she dresses minimally on her top-half with a simple grey coat and thick scarf but one feature I particularly admired was her oversized clutch bag. A chic daytime accessory!
Manchester is a city of culture and diversity and this is made obvious in the continually changing street style. Occupied by a range of high-street shops, designer boutiques and vintage stores, fashion lovers will find much to marvel at here.
