SIGHTS

Need a bit of inspiration? Then check out Southampton City Art Gallery at the Civic Centre. Open seven days a week and filled with an impressive art collection, the gallery is definitely worth a visit. Current exhibitions include the work of Boo Ritson, an artist influenced by American culture, who mixes her knowledge of painting, sculpture, performance and photography. Painting directly on to her subjects, Ritson produces some interesting and very individual creations.
Another interesting exhibition on until January 2012 is ‘Making a Scene’. This exhibition explores the notion of interrupting the etiquette and modesty of public places. 1997 Turner prize winner Gillian Wearing is projected life-size on film, dancing in the centre of Peckham. Passers-by and onlookers are recorded reacting to the unexpected scene before them.
